Sojourn to New York City & Philadelphia
Walk the few square blocks and the harbor waters where the American experiment in liberty was argued, drafted, signed, and set loose upon the world.
No two cities better bookend the founding story than these — the Philadelphia where the republic was conceived and the New York where it was first led. This journey will lead Sojourners to encounter that world not as tourists, but as students of the American founding standing where its principles were first lived out.
In Philadelphia, ordinary men in plain brick halls debated natural rights, framed a Constitution, and staked their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor on the conviction that legitimate authority flows from the consent of a free and virtuous people.
In New York, the new republic was first governed, its commerce took flight, and generations of newcomers caught their first glimpse of a copper torch lifted over the harbor.
Key Sites & Storylines
-
In Philadelphia we stand where a new nation was argued into being. Independence Hall and Congress Hall, the Liberty Bell, Declaration House, and the Museum of the American Revolution tell the story of how the Declaration was signed, the Constitution framed, and self-government first put to the test.
-
The men who staked their lives on independence left their homes, churches, and graves behind them. At Franklin Court, Christ Church, the President's House Site, and the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, we meet the founders as they were — their faith and their sacrifice alongside an honest accounting of slavery in the new republic.
-
Liberty was won through hardship and then made to work. The winter that disciplined Washington's army at Valley Forge gave way to the city where he took the first presidential oath; at Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, and Trinity Church, the government and its commerce began to take their shape.
-
New York Harbor became the threshold of America. The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, the Empty Sky Memorial, and the Brooklyn Bridge speak to the freedom, ambition, and grateful remembrance that drew millions to these shores.
-
A nation's principles endure in the life it builds. From Ground Zero and the 9/11 Memorial, where ordinary courage met evil, to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire State Building, we close among the faith, art, and energy of the great American city.
-
A Taste of the Coast — And we make room for pure delight. Cheesesteaks and soft pretzels in Philadelphia, a slice of real New York pizza, the lights of Times Square, skating at Rockefeller Center, and the salt-and-brick charm of the Atlantic seaboard remind us that learning the past is a joy worth savoring.
The Sojourn to NYC & Philadelphia Difference
Sojourning with us goes far beyond a standard historic-cities tour to provide a theologically informed, historically grounded understanding of how American liberty was conceived, argued, secured, and tested across the very ground where it happened.
By reading the founding documents at the halls where they were written — and by standing at the harbor that welcomed the world and the ground where ordinary people answered evil with courage — Sojourners gain insights that deepen their understanding of America, and their sense of their own calling as citizens and leaders, for the rest of their lives.
